ADDING A CHIHUAHUA INTO A
FAMILY WITH A CAT OR LARGER DOG
Many people ask me if it is o.k. at add a
Chihuahua into a family wit a cat or larger dog.
Yes, you can add a Chihuahua to a family with a
cat or large breed dog.  It could take about two to
three weeks before they accept each other
depending on the dog or cat's personality.  It is
important to introduce them slowly and only have
them together when you are present.  It is
important that they don't play together, until the
pup is at least 3 to 4 lbs.  A large cat or dog can
kill a small pup in seconds if the pup is thought of
as a toy.  A large pup and a Chihuahua pup would
not make a good match.  A small pup could be
hurt if the larger dog doesn't know it's strength
and cats could think the pup is prey.  Make sure
the pup is in it's safety zone area when you are
not supervising.  Remember to spend quality time
with both the older and newly introduced pup.
Your cat or dog's temperament is important,
because an dominate dog or cat could feel that it's
territory is being violated and get aggressive with
the pup.  It is not recommended that a person that
owns a dangerous breed dog (guard dog) should
have a Chihuahua.  They might make a quick
lunch out of the new comer, but there are always
exceptions to the rule.  It is best to only add a
Chihuahua to a home either the larger dog is over
two years old.  Some cats will want to play with a
Chihuahua pup and some won't show any
concern at all,  leaving the pup completely alone.
The responses that I have received from people
that have bought pups from me and have
introduced them into a family with both large dogs
and cats are positive.  Either they tell me that the
animals are best friends or they simply don't have
anything to do with each other.  In other cases the
smaller Chihuahua has grown up and is boss over
the larger dog and or cat.
